Why Practice Pilates?
Think of a tree. Does it have all its strength in its limbs? No. The tree is only as strong as its trunk and roots. Without a strong trunk, the tree would topple over.
It's the same for human bodies. If we don't concentrate on building a good foundation and a strong trunk or core, we'll end up tight in some places and weak in others, injury-prone and susceptible to the pitfalls of our occupation or chosen form of exercise.
This is where pilates comes in. Many people are not aware that Pilates is truly for all bodies and ages and is perfect for keeping you moving pain-free into your golden years.
In an hour long mat class you will do a variety of exercises in a ‘full body’ workout that aims to strengthen your core & trunk, improve your flexibility, correct your postural alignment as well as strengthen and tone your muscles. All this ultimately results in a happier, healthier you!
Pilates is the antidote to what we do to our bodies every day. With a focus on the breath and flow, Pilates exercises relieve stress and soothe aches and pains. With all the hunching and sitting we tend to do, the cues and corrections of each class will increase your postural and muscular awareness, both inside the studio and the minute you step out of it.
What is Pilates?
The Pilates technique (or method) is a low impact workout suitable for all levels designed to strength, lengthen and tone the body. Pilates works with slow, controlled movements and breath to improve flexibility, strength, balance and body awareness. It focuses on strengthening the core (abdominal muscles) while balancing the muscles to create better alignment in a full body workout and is fantastic for getting back into shape or maintaining a healthy physique.
Who can learn Pilates?
EVERYONE!! Pilates can benefit every “body” and is suitable for both men & women, but like all forms of exercise, not everyone will love it as much as we do!
What are the benefits of Pilates?
There are endless benefits to practicing the Pilates method, some of the main differences you will notice are:
- Improved posture
- Increased muscle strength and tone.
- Stronger core and a flatter tummy.
- Improved flexibility and joint mobility.
- Enhanced body awareness and breath control.
- Better co-ordination and balance.
- Improved circulation and lung capacity.
Once you embark on the Pilates journey you will start to feel stronger, taller and more energised within a few sessions. Your body awareness increases and your posture improves leaving you feeling lighter and more confident.
What are the Pilates Mat class general precautions?
Although Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise, certain people should seek medical advice before commencing a mat class, including:
- people who have recently had surgery
- pregnant women
- anyone who has not exercised for a long time
- people who are very overweight or obese.
If you have a pre-existing medical condition i.e. or musculoskeletal injuries or disorders then unfortunately our mat classes are not for you. You would be better suited to a clinical pilates studio that offers one on one equipment sessions.
What mat class do I start with?
We have a variety of classes to suit everyone. We recommend starting with a Beginner class if you are new to Pilates or returning after a break to learn & become re-aquainted with the principles and basic exercises. We recommend sticking with Beginner classes until you are confident to progress to our more challenging classes.
How often should I take a mat class?
To gain the maximum benefit we recommend 2 classes per week. The more you practice the better you get. If you want to feel or see a difference you MUST do the work!
How long are the mat classes?
All our mat classes are 60minutes in duration allowing a full body workout in each class with a stretch session at the end.
What do I need to wear & bring to a mat class?
- Please wear clothing that does not restrict movement i.e. comfortable gym / active wear.
- You are welcome to wear grip socks or practice in bare feet.
- Bring a towel to place over our mats for hygiene reasons & a hand towel to use for exercises.
- Bring bottled water at room temperature to have beside you on the mat.
When will I notice a difference to my body?
Although you wont “see” a difference after the first session, it is expected that your thought process may be changed, even just a little. “How am I standing?” “Are my abdominals switched on?” and “Oh no, look at my posture!” could be a few things that cross your mind. We teach you how to make your Pilates practice a part of your everyday life.
The amount of time it takes to “notice” a difference varies for each individual, although we expect that you will notice a difference (particularly in your tummy muscles) after about 10-20 sessions.
"In 10 sessions you will FEEL the difference, in 20 sessions you will SEE the difference and in 30 you will have a WHOLE NEW BODY" - Joseph H. Pilates
How many people are in each mat class?
With a maximum of 6 clients per class, our small group classes allow our instructor to focus and assist each individual.
What do I need to know for my first mat class?
Please arrive 5-10 minutes early to your first class so you can fill out a form with your contact information, get to know the studio space and meet the instructor.
How do I book into a mat class?
Either call the office in advance on 02 4284 9578 or text us on 0407 216522 to check availability in a particular class and book in.
What if the mat class is full and I’m placed on a waitlist?
With a maximum of 6 clients per class we often have a waitlist for our classes. Our waitlists often move quickly. If someone cancels their spot or late cancels (cancels less than 6 hours before the start of the class), and we see you on the waitlist, we will text you to see if you are still keen to attend.
How old do I have to be to attend a mat class?
You must be 18 years or over to attend our group classes.
Can I still do mat Pilates if I have an injury?
It will depend on your injury and your road to recovery. Call us on 02 4284 9578 to discuss your options. We may ask for a medical certificate from your specialist. In most cases we do accommodate your injury however, group classes involve a full body workout, so in some instances this can be quite challenging for both the injured client and the instructor.
What facilities do you offer?
We provide parking on site, drinking water, and have a bathroom & small changing facility in the studio. We do not offer showering facilities.

What is the Late Cancellation & No Show Policy? (Pilates)
In order to create a happy and fair experience for all of our valued clients and as a courtesy to our staff who pre-plan classes to suit individuals who are booked in we have a cancellation policy in place.
To avoid the late cancellation & No Show fee of $25 (or one stamp on your 10 class card), it is each client’s responsibility to cancel via phone 02 4284 9578 or text message to 0407 216522 at least 6 hours in advance (or by 8pm the night prior for any morning class) should you need to cancel or reschedule your class. No shows and classes cancelled less than 6 hours in advance will be subject to the $25 fee (for casual clients payable prior to attending your next class), or for clients who have purchased a 10 class card you will then forfeit that class and will be stamped twice at your next class.
Please be mindful to cancel the night before prior to 8pm so that someone on the waitlist especially for a 6am class may be contacted to take your spot. Please don't late cancel right before morning classes when it is really difficult to then give enough notice to someone on the waitlist.
What is the Late Cancellation & No Show Policy? (Tap Classes)
Tuition Fees will be credited towards the following term should a weekly class be cancelled by Rhythmic Moves for any reason.
There are no refunds or credits for missed classes.
